昼夜, night and day, is a wagashi ”plate” or box created especially the wagashi Yokan, yoru no ume, in mind.
When creating this piece I was inspired by the Japanese jubako boxes, to me a completely new way of presenting food. I was intrigued by the idea of covering and uncovering the food, as it makes the act of eating special and puts more focus on the dish itself.
Taking the lid off over from the wagashi and putting it aside makes the moment special, in a way a ritual.
One looks at the wagashi even more carefully when it’s first hidden from the eyes.
The Yokans name, yoru no ume, inspired me to create a piece that tells about the course of the day. The dark and mysterious night above the light and clear day. The wagashi is hidden underneath the night that it´s named after.
The forms and colours of the wagashi box represent not only the day and night but also tell about the spirit of Yokan, quite simple, but filled with interesting details.
